Russell Akin, MD | Board-Certified Dermatologist | Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon | Skin Cancer Specialist | Midland, Texas
Here in West Texas, we have a patient population who spends a lot of time outdoors for work, which may result in the development of skin cancer. If you’re looking for a painless and non-surgical option to treat your non-melanoma skin cancer in the Midland, TX area, consider Xoft Electronic Brachytherapy at Midland Dermatology.
Midland Dermatology recently introduced Xoft, which is for treatment of non-melanoma, superficial skin cancer lesions, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Xoft is a superficial form of radiation therapy that has been used in breast cancer treatments for about a decade, and was recently adapted for skin cancer treatment within the last few years, as well.
Am I a Good Candidate for Xoft?
You may be a good candidate for Xoft Brachytherapy at Midland Dermatology if you, 1. Have a superficial skin cancer lesion, 2. You don’t want to have surgery, or 3. You simply don’t want to have the scar associated with having surgery. Xoft is also a great tool to use to remove skin cancer in areas that are difficult to treat, such as around the eyes or on the head, for example. It’s important to note that not all skin cancers are a candidate for Xoft and may need to be removed surgically with Mohs surgery here at our dermatology clinic in Midland, TX.
How Many Xoft Treatments Will I Need?
Xoft requires two treatments per week for four weeks, or eight total skin cancer treatments. Xoft is an outpatient skin cancer removal procedure and is performed in-house at our dermatology clinic in Midland, Texas.
Essentially, Xoft makes skin cancer removal easy for patients. After an initial consultation is performed, the actual visits to remove skin cancer with Xoft are pretty short for the patient, and typically last about 10-15 minutes.
