One of the top questions we are asked is, “What are the most important products I need to include in my daily skincare routine?” With many skincare product options out there, it can be challenging to know which products actually work. Having a daily skincare routine is the best way to keep your skin healthy and to reduce the appearance of aging over time. In this blog post, we outline the top 5 items you need in your daily skincare routine. (Check out this short TikTok video from Caitlyn for more details!).

The foundation of a great skincare routine always starts with a good cleanser. It’s important to wash your face 1-2 times a day to remove dirt and oil and to help prevent acne breakouts. If you have dry skin, you may consider washing your face only once a day, unless you need to wash off sunscreen, makeup, sweat, etc.

When it comes to washing your face, it’s important that you select a “gentle” cleanser to help reduce irritation on your skin. Some great facial cleansers we recommend are Cetaphil, CeraVe, or ZO Gentle Cleanser. Cetaphil and CeraVe can be found over the counter, while ZO Gentle Cleanser is a product we sell at our clinic or in our online store.

After cleansing, the next step is to use a good toner. Facial toners are great to brighten, hydrate, and stimulate collagen on your face, which helps with anti-aging. Toners are also used after cleansing to help remove the last bits of dirt, oil, and makeup, and restore the skin’s pH. The best time to apply toner is after washing your face and before putting on moisturizer; however, it is also great to apply when your face needs a cleansing, hydrating, or oil-absorbing boost. Our favorite facial toner that we like to recommend to patients is the ZO Calming Toner.

Your skin’s health depends on retaining moisture. Hot water, dry air, and other elements in the environment are all examples of things that cause dry skin. In addition, using moisturizers at a younger age helps reduce signs of aging as you get older. Remember, it’s way easier to be proactive in preventing aging than it is to be reactive. Taking care of your skin now will absolutely benefit you in the long run.

It’s a great idea to use a moisturizer both during the day and at night before bed. During the day, we recommend using a lighter moisturizer that will soak in quickly and won’t cause build-up under your makeup. For daily use, we recommend moisturizers from CeraVe or Cetaphil. In the evening, we recommend using an anti-aging moisturizer each day, such as ZO’s Recovery Creme.

Eye Cream

After moisturizing your skin, we recommend using a good eye cream. Eye creams are a great way to help hydrate, firm, brighten, and soothe your skin, as well as help reduce the appearance of aging. It’s recommended to use eye cream on the skin near the eyes, but not on the top of your eyelid or too close to your bottom lash line. Eye creams are typically thicker in consistency than your everyday moisturizer, and are specifically formulated for the delicate skin surrounding the eye. The skin around the eyes is more delicate and fragile, drier, and quicker to show signs of aging than other parts of the face. We recommend using the SkinBetter Instant Effect Eye Gel twice a day. This product can be purchased at our clinic.

We’ve said it once, and we will say it again: Daily sunscreen is your KEY to anti-aging and the most important step in your skincare routine. The sun is the top reason why people’s skin will age prematurely. Of course, the damage that occurs from the sun isn’t only cosmetic, and sun exposure also causes skin cancer. To finish your daily skincare routine, we recommend using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen or higher, such as Elta MD sunscreen (sold at our clinic), that has zinc oxide in it. It’s important to add sunscreen to not only your face, but also to other sun-exposed areas, such as your neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and chest. Even if you work indoors, the small things you do each day, such as walking to and from your car, walking your dog, gardening, driving, etc., all add up to the larger picture of sun damage to your skin and contribute to aging over time.
