Have you ever noticed that your skin gets drier in the wintertime? A combination of cold air, low humidity levels, and dry indoor heat dries out the skin, which often leads to flakiness, redness, itchiness, cracks in your skin, and more. The best way to avoid dry skin this season is by being proactive with your skincare routine. With the winter months quickly approaching, we give our top tips for keeping your skin moisturized during the colder seasons.

How to Keep Your Skin Moisturized this Winter

Use a humidifier

While the heat in your home keeps you warm in the winter, it also dries out the skin. Using humidifiers helps keep moisture in the air, which can help prevent dry, irritated skin in the first place. Humidifiers are especially great to use at home overnight to help replenish moisture in the top layer of your skin.

Moisturize your skin regularly

It’s important to moisturize the skin all over your body, not just on your hands. After you shower, we recommend using a thicker, hydrating moisturizing cream. The thicker consistency of the cream helps lock in the moisture and prevent cracking. It’s recommended to moisturize your skin twice a day in the winter, and especially right after washing your skin, whether in the shower or simple handwashing. CeraVe and Cetaphil both offer great moisturizing creams and can be found over-the-counter. In addition, LaRoche Lipikar is a new thick cream moisturizer that dries and does not leave a greasy film.

Avoid long, hot showers or baths

Did you know that hot water actually dries out your skin? Although hot showers or baths in the winter sound like a great idea, the hot water actually strips away your skin’s natural oils, which helps keep your skin moisturized. It’s recommended to keep your showers at a lower temperature for 5-10 minutes maximum, and immediately moisturize your skin after getting out.

Drink more water

Don’t forget to also hydrate from the inside! Not drinking enough water can affect your skin’s health and make it more susceptible to drying out. It’s important to drink the recommended 8-10 cups of water a day to maintain proper hydration.
