best dandruff shampoo

Dandruff is a common condition we treat here at Midland Dermatology. Dandruff is a scalp condition in which small pieces of dry skin flake off from the scalp. For most people, dandruff does not require medical attention and can be treated at home using special shampoos that target dandruff. In this blog post, Katie Williamson, PA-C, outlines the three best over-the-counter shampoos for dandruff.

Best Dandruff Shampoos

Dandruff Shampoo 1: Nizoral

The first over-the-counter shampoo I recommend for dandruff is called Nizoral. It’s a topical “Ketoconazole” shampoo that works well to treat mild dandruff. We commonly prescribe prescription-strength Nizoral shampoo at our office, but you can purchase the lower-strength version at the store to try it out. With Nizoral shampoo, I recommend you rub it on your scalp and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off.

Dandruff Shampoo 2: Head & Shoulders

The second over-the-counter shampoo I recommend for dandruff is called Head & Shoulders. It’s sometimes a good idea to alternate between Head & Shoulders and Nizoral shampoo. With Head & Shoulders shampoo, I recommend you rub it on your scalp and let it sit for about 5 minutes before rinsing it off.

Dandruff Shampoo 3: T Sal

The last over-the-counter shampoo I recommend for dandruff is called T Sal. T Sal has salicylic acid in it, which helps relieve the itching and flaking associated with dandruff. Neutrogena makes a great T Sal shampoo that we like to recommend to patients.

Overall, my top three recommendations for over-the-counter shampoos to treat mild dandruff are Nizoral, Head & Shoulders, and T Sal. If these shampoos aren’t working for you and your dandruff is a little more severe, then we would love to see you as a patient here at Midland Dermatology to help get your dandruff treated!
